Long ago, animals lived in harmony. They ate wild flowers, especially oginii-waabigwan, roses that did not have thorns. This balance was disturbed by the greed of the “waabooz” rabbits, which decimated entire fields, forcing Nanabouzo to give the roses thorns so that they could protect themselves.
