When the king of Syracuse tasked Archimedes with proving that a crown was not made entirely of pure gold, Archimedes discovered while taking a bath that “any body immersed in a fluid experiences an upward force exerted by the fluid, equal in magnitude to the weight of the volume of fluid displaced.”
