The peer approach as a mental health strategy and intervention tool has spread and developed in recent decades. In Northern Ontario, two flagship organizations train and hire peer helpers. In Sudbury, the Northern Initiative for Social Action and in North Bay, People for Equal Partnership in Mental Health, advocate for the development and recognition of the experiential knowledge of these peer caregivers in the community network of traditional health. A good example of the advances of these community-based organizations is the collaboration of PEP and the North Bay Regional Health Center, which has used peer-to-peer for nearly five years and has pioneered this initiative.
