Our correspondent goes back to the site of Île Sainte-Croix, the first French settlement in Acadia and the first failure for Champlain due to a devastating disease: scurvy. The settlement on St. Croix Island was moved to a more promising site: Port-Royal. 1608, Champlain was given a new mission: to establish a permanent settlement in the St. Lawrence Valley.
