As early as the First World War, Canada wanted to convince the population to change its habits in order to export more meat and wheat flour to the Allies. These government interventions led to the first Canada Food Guide in 1942.

Established in 1928 and closed in 1971, Pier 21 was the gateway to Canada for over one million immigrants. Canada continued to receive an average of nearly 13,000 immigrants per year during the Second World War.
