Almost half the countries in Africa are generally considered to be French-speaking, but not all Africans speak French in the same way. This often depends on the influence of the first language spoken at home. In Djibouti, for example, many begin by speaking Arabic or Somali, before acquiring French at school. Phonologist Marie-Hélène Côté, professor at the University of Lausanne, analyzes the subject.
