Admittedly, the starting point of World War I is the assassination, in Sarajevo, of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife, on June 28, 1914. But the conflict which will extend from 1914 to 1918 actually has several origins. Very quickly, this attack has many diplomatic repercussions, between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. The game of alliances and the fear of a territorial domination of one power against the others, lead France, Russia, Germany and England and the members of the British Empire to go to war. Thus, begins one of the most important military conflicts that the world has known so far. Professor at Oberlin College, Leonard Smith recounts the origins of this conflict that has left about nine million dead and twenty million wounded.
