Mom and dad want to have a private conversation and ask Lucas to leave them alone in the living room. Lucas does not understand why he is being sidelined. Celestin advises him to surprise his parents by proving that he is old enough to understand many things.

Students in Lucas's class take the train to the go to the seashore. In the train compartment, a traveler reads his newspaper and lights a pipe ignoring the children around him.
