One of Theo's friends confides all her problems to AI. Can AI feel emotions, or do they just give the impression of understanding us? Some chatbots respond with empathy, encouragement, or humor. They listen, reassure, and sometimes seem to create a bond. Gradually, exchanges become routine and the machine becomes familiar. This closeness is actually based on responses designed to mimic our reactions and ways of speaking. But behind these well-chosen words, what is really going on? At what point do we project emotions where there may not be any? And what do these exchanges say about our relationship with machines?
